Apeiron (Delay), the Event, and the Scintillating Image

Note on Writing and the Development of Apeiron

The development of Apeiron is inseparable from writing. The essay is not an explanation added after the work but another manifestation of the same event. Painting produces concepts that cannot always be anticipated, and writing preserves these discoveries before they dissolve. Certain motifs, colours, and relationships within the work reveal further possibilities that may otherwise remain inaccessible or be lost. Writing therefore functions as an act of inscription, allowing the progression of the praxis to continue through reflection as well as through image-making.

Apeiron (Delay), Space, and the Scintillating Image

The praxis of Apeiron (delay) begins from a simple proposition: there is no isolated event. All things exist through relation, position, and spatial encounter. What appears does not emerge from a separation between past and present, but from the space that exists between things. Delay is therefore not a measure of time but a condition of distance, interval, and relation. Appearance arises within the space between the world, perception, and the image.

Drawing and painting therefore do not begin with objects but with spatial events. The object is not the motif itself but a point of activation within a larger field of relations. The motif emerges through the space between what is encountered and what becomes visible. It is not a copy of the external thing but a reconstruction of the appearance that forms within this interval. Every work produced within Apeiron is grounded in this distinction.

A recent studio experiment involving inexpensive plastic flowers clarified this condition. The flowers functioned only as spatial triggers. They established a field of relations from which a new image could emerge. Once encountered, the flowers were no longer limited to their physical structure or descriptive identity. They became a constellation of forms, colours, tensions, and relationships. The first lines drawn upon black paper were intentionally unstable because they did not describe the flowers themselves but traced the spatial emergence of appearance.

Pastel has proven to be the most appropriate medium for this praxis. Unlike paint, pastel requires no mixing, palette, or preparation. Its direct contact with the surface allows the spatial relationship between perception, gesture, and mark to remain immediate. The medium does not mediate through layers of preparation but allows the hand to respond directly within the field of the image. Pastel becomes a means of preserving the energy of spatial encounter, allowing form and colour to accumulate without losing their original intensity.

Within Apeiron, the highest intensity of appearance is termed scintillation. Scintillation is not an optical effect but the moment when spatial relations achieve their greatest perceptual force. It occurs when colour, form, movement, and attention briefly organise themselves into a heightened state of appearance. The image does not become alive through representation but through the intensity of relationships within the pictorial field.

This understanding differs from historical accounts of Impressionism, although artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Mary Cassatt, and Edgar Degas often pursued moments of heightened appearance. Their work frequently explored the relationship between light, atmosphere, and perception. Apeiron locates intensity elsewhere. Scintillation does not depend solely upon external optical conditions but emerges from the spatial organisation of appearance itself. The image becomes a field where relationships between colour, form, and perception generate their own intensity.

The emergence of scintillation requires the suspension of inherited conventions. Traditional drawing often privileges contour, proportion, modelling, and fidelity to the object. These remain valid aims for artists seeking technical accomplishment or descriptive accuracy. Apeiron pursues another horizon. It asks what image becomes possible when the artist follows the internal relationships of appearance rather than the established grammar of representation. Technical ability is not rejected; it simply becomes secondary to the discovery of new spatial possibilities.

Apeiron is therefore not a method of gradual improvement but a practice of encounter. It does not propose that the artist accumulates solutions through repetition. Each work is a new spatial event. Realisation cannot be permanently possessed because the relationships that produce appearance are constantly shifting. The artist does not impose knowledge upon the image but enters into the conditions through which the image becomes possible.

The purpose of this praxis is not innovation for its own sake but the discovery of new aesthetic horizons. Throughout history, artists have expanded painting by questioning the assumptions that govern how images are formed. Apeiron continues this investigation by proposing that the image does not exist as a translation of reality but as a spatial manifestation of relationships. The work belongs to the interval between things—the space in which appearance comes into being.

The development of Apeiron is inseparable from writing. The essay is not an explanation added after the work but another manifestation of the same event. Painting produces concepts that cannot always be anticipated, and writing preserves these discoveries before they disappear. Certain motifs, colours, and relationships within the image reveal further possibilities. Writing acts as an inscription of these discoveries, allowing the progression of the praxis to continue through both image and thought.

The experiment with pastel and black paper clarifies how spatial relations may become pictorial form. When the artist trusts the relationships emerging within the field of the image, when inherited limitations are suspended, and when the work is allowed to develop through encounter rather than imitation, the scintillating image may appear. The image is not a copy of the world. It is the manifestation of relations within space, encountered by both artist and viewer.

Apeiron therefore describes not only how images are made, but how images come into existence: through the infinite field of relations in which all things appear.

Apeiron(延迟)、空间与闪烁图像
