Perception in Delay and the Emergence of Residue

When I draw a self-portrait, the motif does not enter my perception as a complete and stable image. It arrives in delay, appearing through a succession of linear fragments: edges, angles, tonal boundaries, directional vectors and small relational shifts. Although the digital photograph presents the face as a whole, my experience of looking at it while drawing is not whole in the same way. The face seems to enter perception through successive slices, each momentarily becoming present before another takes its place. The act of drawing becomes a form of tracking this movement — following what emerges rather than simply reproducing what is already there.

At other moments, however, perception behaves differently. There is no sequence of fragments but an inundation. A strong illumination across the skin can produce a sudden flood of colour that seems to plunge into the retina like a wave. Colour is no longer encountered as an identifiable property of the face but as an intensity — a saturation, an almost physical event. The illuminated skin becomes less a collection of surfaces than a chromatic force entering perception.

These two conditions — the linear slice and the chromatic flood — coexist within Apeiron. They are not separate impressions that disappear once the eye has moved elsewhere. They remain active within the indeterminate field of perception, where sensations, memories, intensities and relations continue to interact. Apeiron is therefore not a storehouse of images but a living field of potential from which the next mark can emerge.

When drawing, the mark is produced somewhere within this field of competing and converging sensations. A particular tone, hue, pressure, indentation or direction of line cannot be understood simply as a decision to represent what is seen. It is a residue of the perceptual encounter itself — the consequence of looking, delaying, remembering, correcting and looking again.

The drawing therefore does not translate perception into an image. It reenacts the conditions through which perception becomes material. What appears on the paper is the residue of an event: the linear fragments, the chromatic inundations, the delays and intensities that have passed through perception and continue to act within Apeiron.

The self-portrait is consequently not simply an image of myself. It is the material trace of the event of seeing myself.
