Peter Davidson - Black plastic fruit balancing on sake bottle 2026
oil and wax on a wooden panel, 18 × 18 cm
Within Apeiron praxis, the motif functions only as a point of departure: a small fragment of the external world that opens onto something far larger. Even the most modest arrangement of objects constitutes a micro-universe—complex, intricate, and as inexhaustible as any cosmology. These apparently limited configurations contain aesthetic problems of immense depth, offering a perceptual terrain that can be explored without end.
The more I paint these observed conditions in still life—these concentrated perceptual situations—the closer I feel to a kind of scintillating nirvana: a state in which perception opens toward universal horizons, charged with existential traces that may be gleaned as knowledge from uncharted, calligraphic vantage points within painting. Each work becomes a small perceptual field in which the world dissolves into colour, pressure, density, interval, and intensity. The act of seeing extends beyond the motif and enters an inexhaustible field of relations.
Actus Theory proposes that observational painting is not a transcription of visual appearances but the material constitution of a spatial field through perception. The painted surface does not simply reproduce the motif; it establishes a complex arrangement of colour, pressure, density, interval, and material mark. Through these relations, the motif is transformed from an observed object into an autonomous spatial condition. The painting does not seek to reproduce the object as it appears, but to make materially present the spatial relations generated through perception. If this proposition is accepted, its implications extend beyond the individual painting: it suggests a possible future for painting itself.
Once praxis begins within Apeiron, with only minimal reference to the chosen motif, another system of operations emerges. Motif, perceptual distance, spatial tension, and the accumulating marks on the wooden panel enter into a dynamic interplay (this is known as dynamic occisilation. This is the ontological calculus of Apeiron: a shifting system of relations in which perception unravels the apparent stability of the external world, while the developing image generates new spatial conditions through which the motif can be encountered anew.
What appears on the panel is therefore not representation but manifestation. The painting materialises an active relation between world and perception in which the external object is neither simply reproduced nor abandoned, but transformed through the activity of seeing. The sake bottle and plastic fruit remain as initiating conditions, yet the finished work exceeds them. They become coordinates within a larger perceptual field whose relations are continually displaced, intensified, and reconfigured.
The painting thus becomes an autonomous spatial event: a small field in which colour, pressure, density, interval, and material mark produce relations that cannot be exhausted by reference to the objects that initiated them. The finite configuration of things becomes a threshold through which the boundless can appear. Within Apeiron, the still life is therefore not an endpoint but an opening—the moment when the limited world of the motif gives way to the inexhaustibility of perceptual space.
This version is essentially complete. The remaining choices are matters of tone: “negotiation” is more dynamic and poetic, while “active relation” is more precise and theoretically restrained.
