Post-Actus: Art History and Praxis

The Thinker at the Gates of Hell

Medium: Pencil, felt-tip pen, watercolour, ink on 239 g paper (SM)
Artist: P. Davidson

Post-Actus is an artist-theoretical position developed through the practice of observational painting. Its significance does not lie in claiming perception as a new artistic problem, but in proposing a particular way of organising the studio as a site of perceptual inquiry.

The artist establishes the conditions under which looking takes place: what is attended to, what is disregarded, and what rules are adopted, altered, or abandoned. Inherited visual resources can enter this process without determining its outcome. These conditions are not fixed in advance; they are generated, tested, and revised through praxis.

In this sense, Post-Actus permits the conscious reuse of material from art history without requiring stylistic allegiance. Earlier forms, images, and methods remain available, but they need not prescribe what is made. Art history becomes a resource rather than a prescription.

This also shifts the question of originality. Originality need not mean the invention of an entirely new visual language, nor an attempt to escape what has already been made. Something singular can instead emerge from the sustained investigation of perception and from the artist's freedom to establish the terms under which that investigation takes place.

The Thinker at the Gates of Hell operates within this condition. Its title acknowledges an inherited artistic image, while the drawing itself is an act of looking rather than an attempt to reproduce, illustrate, or submit to that inheritance. What matters is what the historical image becomes when it passes through a particular body, a particular observation, and a particular set of studio decisions.

Post-Actus therefore does not propose a way out of art history. It proposes that the artist can decide, through praxis, how art history enters the next act of looking.
