Apeiron Praxis and the Scintillation of Painting

Plastic Fruit on Pedestal

In my practice, the palette knife—used alongside the brush and heavy impasto—becomes a conduit for the density of sensation that resonates from apeiron through perception, attaching itself to the nervous system and integrating with delay. Painting, for me, is never a single channel of observation; it gathers a vast array of sensorial aspects and memories that I cannot fully explain, yet know to be present as an omnipresent randomness within the structure of making.

What continues to surprise me is how deeply this connects to the history of painting. Rembrandt, Goya, Courbet (who seems to have invented the modern sense of the knife), Cézanne, and Monet all used the palette knife as part of their own painterly synthesis—each seeking scintillation within the surface, and often achieving it with remarkable force.

The palette knife is a wonderful tool to render oils: it is like having Christmas every day in painting—the way it interacts with oil and medium, the sensorial charge it produces when placed onto the wooden panel after the initial acrylic ground has fixed the motif in place. I move through observational glances until apeiron takes over the praxis.

If the motif scintillates, there is no better feeling in painting. It is the complete apogee of observation: analysing the object through apeiron, then applying that perception—delayed, transformed—onto the small wooden panel. This is apeiron praxis as symphonic ontology: colour, texture, and contrast constructed around a cheap plastic fruit raised on a pedestal. The artificial object becomes a site where sensation, memory, and material pressure converge.

It is pure bliss in painting.
