From Photograph to Apeiron: The Hill’s Residue in Small Paintings

This weekend I worked on small paintings—not out of convenience, but because this scale suits my temperament as a painter. It aligns with the experimental praxis of researching Apeiron as an internal motif: one that emerges from the digital photograph of the local hill yet is never reducible to that external source.

In this praxis, Apeiron is already fully operational, conducting its own internal painting logic in delay, interwoven with the residues of a lifetime of perception. That much is increasingly evident. Another realisation—one that comes from being a painter rather than an art historian—is that the sensation of Apeiron in praxis differs fundamentally from the way such phenomena are described retrospectively in art history. Those accounts are necessarily mediated through utterances, letters, documents, and historical interpretation, as with Cézanne or Van Gogh. The lived sensation of Apeiron in praxis cannot be fully captured second-hand. It is a dynamic perceptual force that reorganises the motif, the residue, and the painter’s own aesthetic drive from within the act of painting.

Because the hill is my quotidian view, its residue has saturated Apeiron with a multiplicity of textures, hues, colour-tones, liminal tints, and contrasts accumulated across weather, season, and time. My own lifelong existence—as a living being and as an artist—also impinges upon the internal praxis of Apeiron, through which these residues manifest as paint traces. The cosmology of spectra generated through this saturation is profound, almost limitless: far more than I could ever fully paint in delay across an entire lifetime, extending outward into uncharted aesthetic horizons.

And just because these are small paintings does not mean they are easier to render from Apeiron than larger ones. There is no difference. All painting is difficult when directed toward scintillating, uncharted horizons. It takes decades of praxis to understand this modus operandi. Only now, with advances in science—not because I am a scientist, but because I am attentive to how scientific thinking can illuminate perceptual processes—can I articulate ideas such as The Davidson Hypothesis (t₀ → t₀ + D).

I do not believe this can be fully appreciated through art-historical discourse alone, because such discourse encounters these processes retrospectively, mediated through texts, statements, and historical evidence rather than through the metabolic reality of painting itself. The distinction is not between one form of knowledge being valid and another invalid, but between encountering painting as a historical object and experiencing the internal operations of painting as they occur through sustained praxis. For me, Apeiron belongs to the latter: it is not simply something I theorise about the painting after it has been made, but something that is already operating within the painting before, during, and beyond its material emergence.
