This drawing, which I call an Apeiron plastic fruit still life, began as a simple observational study. Yet as the work unfolded, the motif gradually dissolved into a field of perceptual residues. Once praxis became active, perception reorganised itself through remembered residue, accumulated perceptual memory, and the temporal delay inherent in drawing. Each movement toward scintillation reduced the need to return to the observable motif. The fruit remained present, but increasingly as an ignition point rather than as the element governing the drawing.
Apeiron does not begin with a predetermined outcome. It reveals itself through the marks and traces that accumulate on the paper. These marks are not passive; they influence subsequent decisions in ways that may feel conscious at times and unconscious at others. Within praxis, this distinction is not entirely stable. Drawing often involves responses that occur before reflective thought has fully recognised them. The body, trained through years of practice, reacts to colour, pressure, position, previous marks and emerging relationships. In this sense, praxis becomes a form of embodied intelligence — not separate from thought, but a process in which perception and action continually reorganise one another.
The plastic fruit introduced a particular chromatic problem. Its colour lay outside the range of the pastels available to me, making direct reproduction impossible. Instead, Apeiron began to calculate through residue. The drawing drew upon surrounding hues, the materials at hand, and the marks already present on the paper. Colours that were initially peripheral became active. Existing marks began to influence subsequent marks. The perceptual field reorganised itself according to what the drawing demanded, rather than according to what the object appeared to dictate.
At this point, the function of the observational motif began to shift. Initially, the fruit served as something to be looked at. Gradually, however, what had already been drawn became something else to look at. The drawing began to provide its own perceptual information. A previous mark became a stimulus for another mark; a colour placed beside another colour altered its appearance; a trace left by an earlier movement became part of what the eye encountered next. Observation did not disappear, but became increasingly mediated by the developing drawing.
My awareness of this process was not continuous. At times, praxis resembled walking through a familiar neighbourhood: one remains in control of direction, yet attention drifts elsewhere, and later one realises that certain shops or turns were passed without conscious notice. The drawing unfolded through a similar state of partial awareness. The body continued to act, perception continued to recalculate, and conscious thought intermittently recognised what had already taken place.
I understand this accumulation as perceptual residue. Residue is not merely a memory of the object. It includes what remains from previous looking, previous marks, previous movements and previous decisions. These residues remain active within the drawing and become conditions for what happens next. The object is therefore not simply translated onto the paper. It enters a continuing process in which observation, memory, material and action continually alter one another.
The fruit remains recognisable, yet it no longer fully determines what is being seen. Its initial presence becomes dispersed through colour, gesture, memory and material trace. What began as observation becomes a progressively self‑modifying perceptual field.
For me, this is where Apeiron becomes visible: not as a predetermined image or idea, but as something that emerges through the accumulation of acts, residues and responses within praxis.
