Second-hand Shop Blue Teapot

Peter Davidson - Second- hand Shop Blue Teapot

Pastel carbon and coloured pencil on black pastel paper, 25 cm x 25 cm

In drawing this second-hand shop blue teapot, colour did not begin with a deliberate palette or a predetermined arrangement. It emerged through the act of looking. As I have written elsewhere, colour in my work arises from Apeiron through a recursive perceptual process in which sensation continually returns to the motif, intensifying and transforming what is seen. The resulting hues move towards scintillation, not because they have been consciously orchestrated, but because perception itself generates their relationships.

The marks therefore do not follow a fixed chromatic logic. They arise in the interval between perception and action—between seeing the motif and responding to it with the pastel. My pastels remain within easy reach, scattered in no particular order around the working surface. This apparent disorder is important. It discourages deliberate selection and allows colour to be encountered rather than chosen. I respond to whatever presents itself through sensation: warmth, coolness, texture, intensity, tone, contrast. The pastel catches on the tooth of the black paper; sometimes it glides, sometimes it resists, and that resistance becomes part of the colour as much as the eye does. Colour arrives through the act of looking and is translated into a trace before conscious judgement has time to organise it.

This may seem paradoxical when viewed alongside the chaotic arrangement of pastels. Yet the disorder of the materials is part of the process. It creates a condition in which perception can remain open and responsive. I look at the teapot, return to the surface, look again, and allow the differences between these moments of perception to generate the next mark. In this sense, the drawing develops recursively. Seeing produces a response; the response alters the surface; the altered surface changes what can subsequently be seen.

Apeiron is not a palette, a method, or an external system imposed upon the work. It is the endless field within which perception takes place and from which traces emerge. The drawing becomes a record of this encounter—not simply an image of the teapot, but the accumulation of perceptual events through which the motif becomes present.

This is why colour in pastel is paramount in my work and always has been. Colour does not recede into the background or merely describe an object. It remains immediate, physical, and active. The intense blue of the teapot, surrounded by reds, oranges, pinks, greens and yellows, is not the result of a predetermined harmony. These colours have emerged through the recursive pressure of looking, feeling, and responding.

As soon as the motif is chosen, perception activates. The ordinary object becomes a site of continual visual encounter, and the endless space of Apeiron exerts its influence upon the traces that appear on the paper. What finally remains is therefore neither wholly planned nor wholly accidental. It is the material residue of a process in which perception, sensation, and colour continually generate one another.
