Nude on Pink: Residue, Delay, and the Re‑Emergence of the Motif

Nude on Pink is a small wooden panel — just 23 × 15 cm — yet it has occupied my studio for more than three years. What began as a straightforward figure study has slowly turned into a long enquiry into how an image changes through time. The pose has stayed more or less the same since the first sitting, but the painting has drifted far from its original purpose. It no longer feels like a record of a particular model. In fact, the nude is no longer the same woman depicted in the original photograph; through years of revision, sanding, repainting, and perceptual delay, the image has shifted so far from its initial source that it can no longer be seen as a representation of that specific person. Instead, it has become a study of how a motif reappears through repeated acts of looking, erasing, and re‑making.

In the early stages, the painting still carried the trace of the first encounter. The figure belonged to a specific person and a specific moment. But as the work developed, that sense of specificity faded. The model’s identity gradually receded, replaced by a broader familiarity built from years of drawing and painting the figure. The image began to draw on an accumulated understanding of structure, tone, proportion, and the behaviour of light across flesh. Within the framework of Apeiron, the motif stopped being a fixed source and became something that emerged again and again through the act of painting itself — a perceptual construct rather than a likeness.

Occasionally I returned to an old photograph for small adjustments of proportion or tone. But the photograph never acted as a stable authority. Once it entered the painting process, it was interpreted, altered, and absorbed into the evolving surface. Rather than restoring certainty, it became just another layer in the painting’s slow development — another residue among many.

This long process has shaped how I understand observational painting. Observation is not simply a matter of seeing and reproducing what is in front of the eye. Between looking and painting there is always an interval — a delay — in which perception is interpreted, filtered, and transformed through experience. The painted image grows out of this interval. Each return to the panel adds another layer of attention. In this sense, painting becomes less a transcription of immediate vision and more a material record of sustained looking over time.

The materials themselves — oil, wax, acrylic, pencil — play a role in this. Repeated sanding exposes earlier decisions while leaving traces embedded in the surface. Each revision partially conceals what came before without erasing it. Over time the panel develops a layered structure in which previous attempts at seeing remain physically present. The painting records not only the gradual formation of an image but also the history of its own revision.

For me, Nude on Pink is neither a portrait nor a conventional life study. It is the outcome of an extended engagement with a recurring motif, shaped through repetition, delay, and continual revision. Within Apeiron, the work suggests that the motif is never exhausted in the initial encounter. It remains capable of reappearing through the ongoing practice of painting. What emerges on the panel is not a fixed image recovered from observation, but a provisional form shaped by the accumulated labour of looking
