Note: This observational drawing epistemology will evolve over time.

Within the interval between perception and action, I locate Apeiron. It is not proposed as a total account of consciousness, nor as a substitute for neuroscience or phenomenology. Rather, it is a practice-based epistemology: a framework for examining how knowledge of visual form emerges through the organisation of perception within the act of observational drawing. While this position aligns with broader traditions of practice-based and artistic research, it advances a more specific account of how drawing knowledge is constituted in action.

I propose that image formation begins neither with the physical mark nor with perception alone, but within a perceptual interval in which visual relationships are structured before action. I call this interval Apeiron. Within it, sensation, memory, attention, and visual relations are evaluated, filtered, and transformed into the conditions from which the image can emerge.

The originality of this research lies in identifying this perceptual interval as the generative epistemic structure through which perceptual organisation becomes drawable. Rather than treating drawing as the transcription of an already formed perception, Apeiron locates image formation within the act of discrimination itself. It is here that visual information is selected, withheld, refined, and configured before it is translated into material form.

Apeiron therefore describes a field of potential in which perceptual events are continually assessed. Some sensations acquire significance while others recede. Certain visual relationships demand attention; others remain latent. The image emerges through this ongoing process of discrimination, refinement, and omission rather than through the accumulation of visual information alone.

The significance of this perceptual interval lies in its productive function. It is not an absence of action or a pause between seeing and drawing, but the condition in which perceptual relations are stabilised, tested, and prepared for inscription. Through this process, the practitioner develops the capacity to recognise what is essential to the image and what may remain absent without diminishing its coherence.

Expertise in observational drawing is therefore not simply a matter of increasing representational accuracy. It also consists in the disciplined regulation of attention, the recognition of perceptual residue, and the exercise of economy through both intervention and restraint. Drawing knowledge emerges not only from what is rendered, but equally from what is intentionally left unresolved or omitted.

Within this framework, I use the term micro-space to describe the subtle perceptual field in which image formation begins: the experiential condition in which Apeiron operates. It is not a physical location but a dynamic perceptual field in which the observed motif is reorganised through attention, memory, and artistic intention. Here, perception remains provisional, open to revision, selection, and possibility before it becomes a physical gesture.

The structures that emerge within this micro-space are not disclosed through looking alone. They become available only through perceptual discrimination: the practitioner’s capacity to determine which aspects of perception are necessary to the life of the image and which can remain absent.

Apeiron is therefore not a theory of vision in general, but an epistemology of observational drawing that locates the formation of pictorial knowledge within the non-temporal interval between seeing and making.

Apeiron:

Apeiron:
