Delay as a Living Flow: How Perception Seeks New Horizons

In the studio, drawing never unfolds as a simple transfer from sight to hand. Even the most ordinary motif—a plastic flower, a ceramic dish, a sheet of coloured paper—becomes the site of a far more intricate process. Outwardly, it appears as a quiet act of looking and marking. Inwardly, it is a dynamic flow within the nervous system: a continual reorientation of perception that resembles walking or talking, a structured rhythm that never repeats itself, always adjusting, always improvising, always seeking uncharted horizons within aesthetic sensibility.

Delay is not a pause, nor hesitation, nor a gap between perception and action. Delay is the living flow through which perception becomes form. It is the organisational movement of the nervous system as sensation, memory, intention, and gesture continually negotiate with one another. Delay is therefore not temporal in the ordinary sense; it is the dynamic topology through which perception reorganizes itself into praxis. This movement is the Apeiron. The Apeiron is not simply an archive of residues, memories, chromatic histories, gestural habits, and emotional traces. Nor is delay merely the process through which these emerge. Apeiron and delay are two names for the same living movement. The Apeiron is delay experienced as infinite potential, while delay is the Apeiron experienced in action. Together they describe the continual unfolding through which perception reorganizes itself into aesthetic becoming.

Even when the motif remains still, perception does not. The plastic flower may sit unmoving on the table, yet the perceptual field is turbulent. Decades of drawing rise as residues, each carrying its own weight, history, and demand. These residues do not arrive in sequence. They emerge simultaneously, intertwining with present sensation as perception searches for the next gesture. The hand becomes the site where these forces negotiate, where past experience encounters immediate sensation, and where the nervous system improvises its way forward. This improvisation is delay. Like walking, which never repeats a step despite its recognisable rhythm, or talking, which follows structure without ever repeating the same sentence, delay possesses continuity without repetition. Each drawing reorganizes the perceptual field from which the next drawing will emerge.

The aesthetic itself is never fully present during this process. It is not a style waiting to be expressed, nor a fixed internal identity directing the hand. While working within delay, the artist remains inside the movement of praxis, unable to perceive the totality of what is unfolding. The aesthetic is disclosed only retrospectively, as perception begins to recognise the consequences of its own actions. Often this recognition occurs when the drawing has gone too far. The accumulation of marks eventually slows the vitality of the work. What once felt open and generative becomes excessive. This is not failure but revelation. The perception of excess allows the aesthetic to become momentarily visible. Only through this realisation does the artist perceive the evolving structure of their own sensibility.

Yet this perception does not conclude the process. The recognition itself becomes another residue within the Apeiron. The completed drawing is no longer merely an object but a new perceptual event that folds back into the nervous system. What was experienced from within praxis is now perceived from outside it. This outside perception continually reintegrates with the Apeiron, altering the conditions from which future perception emerges. Praxis is therefore recursive. It continuously folds back into the Apeiron, while the Apeiron continuously unfolds into praxis. Every drawing transforms the perceptual field that makes the next drawing possible. The aesthetic is never fixed because it exists only within this recursive movement. It continually refines itself through the living flow of delay, where each realisation becomes scintillation for future acts of perception.

Working on black paper intensifies this experience. The dark ground behaves like a perceptual void, resonating with the depths of the Apeiron. On black paper, marks do not feel like corrections or adjustments. They feel like emergences. Residues rise from the nervous system like particles suspended in jelly—thick, slow, adhesive—attaching themselves to new sensations as they move through the perceptual field. The black ground amplifies this process, making each mark feel like a condensation of the infinite into visible form.

Drawing is therefore not simply the act of making marks. It is the continual unfolding of delay: the living flow where residues reorganize, where scintillation finds direction, where sensation becomes gesture, and where the Apeiron continually renews itself through praxis. Delay is not an interruption of action but the engine of aesthetic becoming. It is the recursive movement through which perception continually discovers new horizons, not by escaping its history but by continually reorganizing it. Drawing is the living flow where perception becomes form, where the Apeiron finds its trace, where praxis returns to perception, and where delay continually opens the next horizon of aesthetic experience.
