Apeiron, Forensic Rhopography, and the Economy of Artistic Becoming

In my recent digital drawings (I use the term digital drawing because the works are drawn on paper while the motifs are viewed from digital photographs on my personal computer), I returned to a fundamental truth about my practice: Apeiron is not a technique, nor a method of isolating details. It is a horizon of becoming. The digital medium, with its capacity for manipulation, re‑entry, and temporal reactivation, becomes a site where forensic rhopography unfolds—not as a clinical inspection of parts, but as a perceptual excavation of the micro‑grain from which the artwork emerges.

Forensic rhopography, in my sense, is not the study of small objects or minor details. It is the analysis of the residues of perception: the micro‑temporal traces, half‑glimpsed intensities, and latent structures that remain embedded within the motif after attention has moved on. These residues do not become visible through prolonged observation alone, but through discrimination—through recognising what need not be drawn.

Drawing is often understood as an accumulation of actions: observing, measuring, modelling, correcting, and rendering. Apeiron proposes something different. The image does not emerge through the activity of drawing alone, but through the continual refusal of unnecessary action. Learning to draw is, in large part, learning what not to do. Economy is therefore not reduction but discrimination. It is the condition through which the image begins to scintillate.

The digital medium intensifies this process because it allows the drawing to be re‑entered at different temporal moments. Each return is not simply an opportunity to add marks but to ask whether another mark is necessary at all. The forensic act is therefore one of discernment. It traces perceptual residues while resisting the impulse to over‑describe them. Every omitted mark preserves the latent potential of the image.

To be driven in drawing is not to select a part of the motif for closer study. It is to choose, through desire rather than method, how the artwork will exceed the paradigms of one’s own aesthetic. The motif is only the ignition point. The real movement begins when attention gathers force and accelerates toward an uncharted horizon. This horizon is Apeiron: the unbounded field of perceptual potential from which gestures emerge and into which they dissolve.

Within this horizon, forensic rhopography traces how perception reorganises itself in micro‑time. It follows the residues left by selection, omission, and return. Scintillation is born not from accumulation but from economy, because economy leaves perception active rather than replacing it with description. As unnecessary description falls away, the drawing acquires a radiance that exceeds the sum of its marks. The image is carried not by everything that has been rendered, but by what perception has made present.

This economy can be recognised in many of the greatest drawings. Their vitality often arises not because every surface is completed, but because only what is structurally necessary remains. The drawing continues within perception rather than ending at the edge of every mark. Such vitality is not the product of historical style or technical finish, but of disciplined restraint. It belongs to the structural conditions of human perception rather than to any particular period or medium.

Thus, the uniqueness of Apeiron lies in its openness. It is not a universal field but a personal horizon of becoming. Forensic rhopography is the practice through which this horizon is continually tested, refined, and expanded. Each drawing is not an exercise in adding information but an encounter with necessity. Every decision not to draw is as significant as every mark that remains.

To draw is to choose a horizon.
To be driven is to exceed it.
To practise forensic rhopography is to discover that scintillation is the consequence of economy.
