The Spatialization of the Apeiron
What happens when seeing becomes making?
The Davidson Framework is a way of thinking about drawing and painting as more than representation. Instead of treating artwork as a picture of the world, it treats it as a record of perception itself.
At the center of this idea is spatialization: the process by which an experience of seeing becomes a physical mark. In other words, what begins as attention, movement, memory, and intention is transformed into something that exists in material space.
The framework also uses the word Apeiron, borrowed from Anaximander. Here, it means a kind of open, pre-image state — the stage before perception settles into a finished picture. It is the space where seeing, movement, memory, and material resistance are still working things out together.britannica+1
From seeing to mark-making
When we draw or paint, we do not simply copy what is in front of us. We translate perception into gesture.
Every line, patch of color, erasure, hesitation, and revision shows a decision being made in real time. The finished work is not just an image of something seen. It is also evidence of how the artist saw it.
That is what I mean by spatialization: perception does not stay inside the mind. Through artistic practice, it becomes visible in the material world.
What the Apeiron means here
In this framework, the Apeiron is not a void or a mistake. It is the generative field where perception is still unfolding.
Before an image stabilizes, a lot is happening at once:
the eye takes in information,
the body moves,
memory shapes attention,
habit influences response,
and the resistance of the medium changes the result.
This is the unstable space where an artwork begins. It is not empty. It is active.
Reading the surface
Every artwork leaves traces. Layers of graphite, charcoal, paint, wax, smudges, corrections, and overpainting can all tell us something about the act of making.
I call this Forensic Rhopography: a way of reading small material events as clues to how perception moved through the work. A smudge, a scratch, or an abandoned line is not just an accident. It is part of the record.
Seen this way, a drawing or painting becomes a kind of archive. It holds not only the final image, but the process that produced it.
Why this matters
For artists, this helps explain why drawings often reveal how we looked, not just what we saw.
For thinkers working in phenomenology, it suggests that lived experience continues into material form.
For neuroscience, it offers a complementary view: the artwork can be read as an external trace of perception, not only as a visual object.frontiersin+1
Closing thought
Painting is not just about making images.
It is about turning perception into space.
The artwork that remains is more than a picture. It is a material record of seeing in motion — a trace of the ongoing shift from experience to form.
